How to use Social Media to benefit your business!
Lots of businesses have accounts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google+. Over the past couple of years, many businesses have even begun to establish a presence on photo-heavy sites like Instagram and Pinterest. But many times, business owners get disappointed by the lack of engagement on their social media pages. If you find yourself in that position, don’t abandon ship; there is hope for your social media presence, as long as you commit yourself to stop “winging it” when creating content for your pages.
What does it mean to wing it? If you find yourself doing any of these things, you might be winging it on social media – and doing so at your own peril.
Seeing what sticks. If you haphazardly throw content up on the proverbial Facebook wall to see what will stick, and you are doing it with no discernable strategy, that is a disastrous attempt at winging it. Remember, you need a strategy in order for your social media efforts to be effective. Decide how many days a week you will post, and come up with a few central themes you will post about. That’s a basic starter’s strategy that can put you on the right track.
Self-promoting. It may seem like relentless self-promotion is the point of social media, but businesses that do that are actually missing the point entirely. Your goal should be engagement, which means you want to create posts that get your audience talking. Your posts can and should be relevant to your field, but they should not be blatant ads for your products and services at every turn. Follow a one-third rule, wherein you create clearly promotional posts only one-third of the time.
Talking outside of the brand. You want to keep your brand’s voice in all your social media posts. At no point are you “I” when posting for your business on social media; you are only “we.” Also, it’s important to always speak in the voice of your audience; determine what voice your audience finds the most relatable, and make that the voice you speak in on all your social media pages.
